Before Everything, God | Starting the Year with Faith and Purpose
SEEKING GOD
By: Felicia S.
This devotional is a reflection on how to start the year with more meaning, direction, and inner balance. Inspired by a biblical principle, the text invites the reader to reflect on priorities, choices, and the importance of aligning one's inner life before pursuing goals and results.
Starting the New Year with God
The start of a new year always comes loaded with expectations.
Plans, goals, decisions, silent promises made in the heart.
But, before all that… where is God on our list of priorities?
In the rush of life, it's easy to put God as part of the plan—when, in fact, He wants to be the center of the plan.
When God comes after, the soul feels
Many people begin the year asking:
“Lord, bless my plans.”
But they rarely stop to ask:
“Lord, what are Your plans?”
When God doesn't occupy first place:
the soul grows weary,
the heart becomes burdened,
decisions become confused,
and faith becomes merely an emergency support.
God doesn't want to be just extra help.
He wants to be the foundation.
The spiritual order that transforms everything.
Jesus taught us a simple yet powerful principle:
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”-Matthew 6:33
Notice that He didn't say “seek when you have spare time,”
nor “seek after everything is resolved.”
He said: first.
When we put God first:
our priorities align,
our decisions gain direction,
our hearts find rest,
and the rest falls into place.
First and foremost, God in the heart.
Putting God first is not just a nice phrase.
It is a daily decision.
It is choosing to:
Listen to the Word before listening to fear;
Pray before acting on impulse;
Trust before trying to control;
Obey even when we don’t understand everything.
It is sincerely saying:
“Lord, this year is Yours.
My life is Yours.
My paths belong to You.”
A new year begins at the altar.
Every new season needs a new altar.
A place of surrender, dedication, and alignment of the heart.
We don’t start the year with perfection,
but we can start with dependence.
God doesn’t expect you to have all the answers.
He only expects you to put Him first.
Vitamin for the Soul: Starting the Right Way
Vitamin for the Soul was created with this purpose:
to remind us that the soul also needs nourishment,
and that no achievement can replace the presence of God.
Before goals.
Before dreams.
Before plans.
Before decisions.
Before everything, God.
Final prayer
Lord, in this new year, we choose to put You first.
We surrender our plans, fears, and expectations to You.
Align our souls with Your Kingdom
and teach us to live each day under Your guidance.
Amen.
